The Capstone Group will be presenting a teacher professional development workshop at the WVSTA annual conference on November 6, 2014 in Glade Springs, West Virginia.
The Wheeling-based Capstone Group to present a series of professional development offerings at the 2014 annual West Virginia Science Teachers Association Conference.
The Capstone Group professional development workshops are designed to enhance Grades 5—12 teaching and learning about climate change through problem-based learning. The workshops will focus on delivering the latest climate science information to West Virginia teachers.
This professional development initiative is designed to address the need to inspire, motivate, and prepare America’s youth , especially those in rural areas like West Virginia, for careers in STEM areas. The Capstone Group professional development program will inspire teachers to add new instructional strategies to their classroom teaching.
Three types of professional development programs will be offered at the WVSTA conference.
A three-hour pre-conference workshop will provide resources and instruction in problem-based learning, implementation in the classroom, issues with assessment, and climate science information. Teachers will leave the workshop ready to implement the modules in their classrooms and will be familiar with climate science data used to begin student critical thinking-based problem solving. Dr. Tina Cartwright, assistant professor of education at Marshall University and former West Virginia State Climatologist, will be a guest presenter during the pre-conference workshop.
An additional 1-hour workshop presented during the conference will focus on utilizing one of the modules as a guide for implementation of others and will focus on PBL strategies, issues with implementation, and climate science information, including those local to the West Virginia environments.
A conference booth will provide an opportunity for more teachers attending the conference to access information about the climate science resources available through the Capstone Group, NASA, NOAA, USGS, and other government and non-profit sources.
As part of the WVSTA conference professional development activities, teachers will be introduced to an online climate education collaborative and shown where support materials, NASA climate science news and data resources are made available with relevant blog commentary and support by Capstone Group directors, Mrs. Manetta Calinger and Dr. Laurie Ruberg. Workshop participants will be encouraged and prompted to share their post workshop climate science implementation classroom experiences via a closed group forum and educator blog site.
Teachers can register for the Capstone Group pre-conference workshop on the WVSTA website:http://www.wvsta.org/index.php/2014conference/pricing-and-registration.html. For more information about these professional development opportunities contact: capstonegroupinc@gmail.com.
